Green Thumb Gardening Lecture Series

This monthly series is presented by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Harris County Master Gardeners. The mission is to help educate the residents of Harris County on sustainable gardening and horticultural practices.



Growing & Nourishing Healthy Communities

This 6-week program is presented by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Better Living for Texans. This 6-week program teaches basic gardening skills with a focus on growing vegetables.

Green Thumb Gardening Lecture Series


Plumerias in Your Garden 

Learn about their history, types of Plumerias, care and cultivation, propagation and overwintering.  A short demonstration on propagation will also be provided.

Fall Vegetable Gardening 

Learn how to prepare your garden, prep the soil, use fertilizer, and discover which vegetables are best to grow for the Houston-area fall season.

Gardening for Beginners 

Learn the basics for successful gardening including where to locate your garden, how to prepare the soil, when to plant and how to care for your plants.

Permaculture 

Learn how to use and adapt permaculture techniques to your garden.  This is a great philosophy to incorporate, as much as you are able to, to make a positive impact on your local and regional ecosystem.

Learn how to grow new plants from a variety of sources (seeds, cuttings, and other plant parts) to save money, increase the plants you love and provide a thoughtful gift to share with others.

Identify the characteristics of a suitable garden site

Evaluate soils and identify the main components as sand, silt, clay, or loam; Make compost and know what materials are best for home composting

Learn to plant a container or raised bed garden with transplants or seeds

Maintaining Your Garden 

Identify good maintenance practices common to vegetable gardens; Keep a garden journal to help observe plant health and growth, investigate problems, and record measures taken to resolve problems

Diseases and Insects  

Identify causes, symptoms, prevention, and treatment of common vegetable disorders and diseases; Detect common insect pests and beneficial insects
